About Leasing
A lease or tenancy is the right to use or occupy personal property or real property given by a lessor to another person (usually called the lessee or tenant) for a fixed or indefinite period of time, whereby the lessee obtains exclusive possession of the property in return for paying the lessor a fixed or determinable payment.
- Leasing operations are rather new elements on the leasing market. The first leasing operations were carried out in the United States of America in 1954, leading to the establishment of the American Leasing Corporation. Subsequently, leasing-related activities developed rapidly, extending in all developed countries in the world, being an important element of the economy.
- In Romania, the first leasing company was established in 1994 – SC Mister D Leasing SRL.;
- Three of the most important companies at that time on the market were: Demir Romlease (currently UniCredit Leasing), DRT Leasing and Romlib Leasing.;
- In Romania, the first legal frameworks concerning leasing were issued in 1995. During 1997, as a consequence of the fast development of leasing activities, the first Leasing Law was issued – Government Ordinance no. 51/1997, ratified in 1998.;
- Three leasing companies established in February 1996 the National Union of Leasing Companies aiming at promoting leasing activities and their benefits on the Romanian market.
